Lead Acid Battery 

is a device that converts the chemical energy of electrolytes into electrical energy by  submerging two electrodes (+, -) in electrolytes, and stores the electrical energy for later use.  The stored electrical energy can be used on demand when necessary and it is called discharging.  Electrolyte : Diluted Sulfuric Acid 38%, Specific Gravity 1.280
During the discharging cycle, sulfate(SO4) bonds with polarized plates and its specific gravity decreases as it separates from water.  During the charging cycle, the bonded sulfate(SO4) returns to electrolytes and its specific gravity increases again. After batteries are used for prolonged period of time with repeated charge and discharge cycles, anglesites (lead sulfate crystals) can build up on the plates during the cycles.
Sulfates can combine with the plate or with other SO4’s to cover the plate with layers, forming as an insulating membrane.  This built up layers of sulfate eventually cut off the passage of electrochemical reactions and it is the status of battery dead so to be discarded.
There are some other reasons that cause malfunction of battery but above is the typical reason.

 

Battery worn out

In case of normal 12V SLI (Starting, Lighting and Ignition) battery, the open circuit voltage measured by tester is around 12.8V. And if the measured loading voltage is above 10.8V,  you might be able to start up the car engine with satisfaction.  If loading voltage of battery is 10.0V ~10.2V, the car won't start up easily. If loading voltage of battery is under 10.0V, it never start up the car, so it can be regarded as dead battery.  It is known to be unable to restore the battery in case of the measured loading voltage is under the 10.0V in common.  
Other than SLI batteries such as deep cycle battery, UPS battery, AGM battery etc. are basically also the same as SLI battery in the way of restoration.

3. Voltage and current control function for optimistic restoration.       

4. Function of memory hold when sudden electrical failure or accidental switch off occurs. (It maintains the status and time so you can continue the restoration without restarting the progress when the power returns.)    

5. Fan cooling for inner temperature control of Restorer.    

6. Shuts off output power when Restorer is overheated.    

7.  Automatic power cut off with ending signal at the time of completion.    

8.  Announcement of bad battery with display when battery cell is abnormal.

9. Function of full discharge during process.

10. Provides reference time to figure out the battery capacity.

7. When the machine detects the critical damage of the battery during the restoration the machine stops restoration with “CEL bad” display.  This function saves time to achieve more effective result.
