Product Information
HICON Series - Ply-Bonding Agents
HICON series is a mixture of the epoxidized polyaminoamide and a specialized polyamine that can be used as ply-bonding agent for paperboard over a wide range of pH. It provides superior bonding strength to the multi-layered paperboard, especially under high atmospheric moisture.
Paper is a layered mat consisting of a network of cellulose fibers bonded together. Each of the fiber-fiber contacts is held together by intermolecular hydrogen bonding and/or Van der Waals forces which are very sensitive to water, the extent of bonding decreasing steadily as the moisture (water) content of the paper increases. In the case of multi-layered paperboard exposed to highly moisturized atmosphere, the strength drop is usually greater than the case of paper.
To produce papers and paperboards that retain some of their original dry strength when wet, it is necessary to do one of follows:
- Add to or strengthen existing bonds
- Protect existing bonds
- Form bonds that are insensitive to water
- Produce a network of material that physically entangles with the fibers.
To achieve these, HICON series have been developed which are chemically reactive and water-soluble polymers. The chemical reactivity of HICON series can be of either the polymers can react with themselves (homo-crosslinking) or they can react with cellulose or the materials at the cellulose interfaces (co-crosslinking).
HICON series can also be applied to the surface of papers and paperboards by spraying as well as the internal addition method. It might be a good idea for spraying HICON solution to the surface of paper web when the content of anionic trash in the papermaking system is high. It is very easy to handle of HICON series due to its low viscosity.
Mill experience data of HICON series obtained from a typical paperboard mill will be supplied on request.

3. Heath and Safety
Toxicity, caused by HICON products alone and when incorporated into papers and paperboards, has not been reported so far. The content of HICON series is listed under Title 21 of the Code of Federal Regulations, Paragraph 176.170. However, contact with the HICON solution should be avoided because of its acidic nature. When exposed to the solutions, wash with fresh water immediately.

Taegwang Chemicals Co., Ltd. is a leader in the development and production of paper additives in Korea. Started out as Taegwang Chemicals Company in 1982 which was our first step into paper chemicals industry, we have been growing and expanding ever since. In 1987, we re-established as Taegwang Chemicals Co., Ltd. with our accumulated technological know-how and expertise to fulfill our customers' needs and meet their requirements.
Our success has been resulted from continuous and thriving effort in development and improvement of our products while accumulating new and advanced technologies. It is no wonder that we, Taegwang, are the first in Korea to develop and supply alkaline sizing agents (AKD emulsion size) which contributes cost reduction and environmental impacts as well as improvements of quality for paper industry in Korea.
Since 1987, Taegwang has been providing technical aids to paper industries, which converted for alkaline papermaking, and Taegwang is now recognized as the leader in technology for alkaline papermaking in Korea. Our major product lines are AKD SIZING AGENTS, ROSIN-BASED SIZING AGENTS, FIXING AGENTS, WET- & DRY-STRENGTH AGENTS, DYE FIXING AGENTS, RETENTION AIDS (PROGRAMS), and ANIONIC TRASH CATCHERS.
We will not stop here, but continually thrive and step forward until we become a leader in the world-wide paper chemicals industry.
