 Parylene is a powdery organic monomer, a colorless transparent organic material in which thermoplastic polymers vaporize in a vacuum to form a thin film on the surface of an object.

 Parylene has been commercialized in earnest since the 1990s and is attracting attention as a uniform coating technology that acts as a protective film on the surface of various parts such as electronics, communication, mechanical parts, and medical devices such as insulation corrosion prevention, waterproof coating, and powder scattering.

 Because parylene is vacuum deposited in a gaseous state, it can solve problems such as shape deformation and surface shrinkage that occur during the coating and drying of the solution process. In addition, surface polymerization occurs in the gaseous state, enabling uniform coating between fine cracks and structures.

 Thus, fundamentally resolving defects in bridging, thin plates, pinholes, puddling, run-off, and sagging, the coated parylene thin film is coated in vacuum and room temperature, resulting in no stress caused by heat, mechanical or stress generated by the thin film.

Mechanical characteristics

Lots of the mechanical characteristics of parylene polymer film are similar to those of the conventional plastics.

In general, increase in crystallinity due to mature or heat treatment reduces destruction elongation and increases modulus and strength.

 

Thermal characteristics

In case that Parylene film is exposed in an oven where air is circulated at a certain temperature

When the failure criterion is defined as the period of 50% reduction in tensile strength, N, C, and D type parylenes are maintained for 10 years at 60˚C, 80˚C and 100˚C respectively, without any change in physical properties in the atmosphere.

 

Electrical characteristics

The electrical properties of parylene are very good for the applications in electronic devices

It has low dielectric constant and dielectric loss, and is not affected by adsorption of water at room temperature.

Dielectric strength is relatively good.

 

Chemical resistance

At the temperature below the melting point of crystalline polymers, parylene is resistant to all existing solvents.

When parylene film is exposed to organic solvent, the organic solvent penetrates into the amorphous phase and causes the slight swelling phenomenon.

 

Transmission prevention, and optical and surface characteristics

The best penetration preventing characteristics among the existing organic polymer coating films

Films and coatings are transparent in the visible light range, but opaque when irradiated with ultraviolet rays

As a result of UV/VIS measurement of general glass and parylene-coated glass, it can be seen that it has the light transmittance of about 90% or more

Vaporizer: Evaporating parylene dimer by applying heat between 80℃ and 175℃

Parolyzer: Applying high heat between 650℃ and 700℃ to convert gaseous parylene dimer into monomer

Main Chamber: Coating parylene on the surface of the object in the form of polymer inside the chamber at room temperature

Cold Trap: Cryogenic protective tube cooled between -70℃ and -100℃ is condensed on the surface of the cryogenic protective tube to prevent parylene by-products and moisture generated during the parylene coating process from entering inside of the vacuum pump

Vacuum Pump: Maintaining vacuum in all the parts connected to vacuum chamber
