If no activity is detected after a set period of time, LUXTEP sends an automated check-in message to your pre-registered emergency contacts.

A high-spatial resolution of matrix-based force sensitive resistors generates 3600 sensor points and collect body weight distribution (left/right, forefront/rearfoot), stride length, and single and double support times. These parameters predict the risks of falling in both static and dynamic scenarios. Slower velocity, longer double stance phase, and shorter stride length all increase higher risks of falling, confirming the 96% accuracy rate. The real-time state of balance is directly displayed by LED sensors with three levels (Red, Yellow, and Blue) on the mat. This preventative approach is critical to increasing self-awareness and self-correction of risky postures and movements, ultimately improving quality of life. A longitudinal usability study of LUXTEP using Fall Efficacy Scale-International (FES-I) demonstrated increased scores for the elderly regardless of fall experience over time. Those with fall experience indicated the highest level of satisfaction.

LUXTEP is designed to be alone or together. Empirically evaluating the required width for a person to stand or walk comfortably in a straight line led us to select a basic sensing mat with a width of 24 inches (609.6 mm).
