Bienox: Botulinum Toxin 

1. Description

    Botulinum toxin is a protein produced by the clostridium

botulinum strains; which are gram-positive, anaerobic bacillus.

It has seven serotypes: from A to G, and consists of about 1,250

amino acids, with A, B and E being the most effective at

blocking the secretion of the neurotransmitter, acetylcholine, in

the neuromuscular junction, paralyzing muscle cells.

The protein structure of botulinum toxin is mostly a beta-sheet

type, which is heavily influenced by pH. Generally, it is the most

stable at a pH of 5 to 7, the component proteins being

separated above 7.

2. Mechanism of action

Botulinum toxin can access the nerve endings thanks to its strong affinity for the receptors in the

cholinergic nerve. Then, the pH in the cell separates it into heavy and light chains. The light chain

denatures transport protein involved in exocytosis at the nerve end. As a result, botulinum toxin destroys intracellular transport proteins, blocking the secretion of acetylcholine and preventing muscles

from contracting.

3. Treatment of Areas

    Botulinum toxin can be used as treatment for: blepharospasm, facial spasm, strabismus, stiffness,

    chronic migraine, hypersensitive bladder, etc.

    Aesthetically, it can be used to improve glabella lines, crow’s feet, forehead lines; and is currently

    expanding its scope to areas such as armpit hyperhidrosis, overdeveloped squared jaw, etc.
