Bismuth Germanate (Bi4Ge3O12) commonly abbreviated as BGO, is a crystal scintillator material that can emit green fluorescent light with a peak wavelength of 480nm, colorless, transparent and insoluble in water

Bismuth Germanate of the composition Bi4Ge3O12, also called BGO, is a high Z, high density scintillation material. Due to the high atomic number of bismuth (83) and its high density, BGO is a very efficient γ-ray absorber. Due to its high density, the material is used where high stopping power is required.BGO is one of the most widely used scintillators, especially for the detection of high energy gamma-rays.High hardness, High scintillation efficiency, Good energy resolution and no hygroscopic.

Main applications

Scintillation BGO crystal has been proven to be reliable in Oil&Gas wireline logging for many years, and the mineral wireline logging, where the NaI(TI) crystal has been universally used, could be another direction, as the lacked of spectrum resolution could be much compensated by its high photon fraction for high energy gamma ray naturally occurring from Uranium and Thorium.

And the nuclear medicine, typically the Computer Tomography(CT), also the high energy physics like the L3 experiment in European Organisation for Nuclear Research(CERN), in which around 12 tons BGO crystal were used.
