Vehicle air conditioning (A/C) systems depend on several interconnected parts, with the compressor being only one component. All parts of this system, from condensers to evaporators, are important. The one piece of the air conditioning system that is absolutely critical, however, is the compressor. The compressor is at the core of the vehicle A/C unit and is responsible for moving refrigerant gases throughout the rest of the system. In order for the A/C system to function, one side must be at high pressure, while the opposite side must be at a lower pressure. This pressure differential is the key to the cooling system. The compressor is mounted between these two sides, maintaining this pressure difference and circulating the refrigerant gases.
