The unique molecular structure of Cardanol especially Unsaturation of long Hydrocarbon side chain, makes the cross linking easy on polymerization. Cardanol based resins possess on outstanding resistance to softing action of mineral oils and high resistance to acids and alkalies, anti-microbial property, terminate and resistance also.
The Mannich reaction of cardanol, formaldehyde, and certain amines is called a phenalkamine. Phenalkamines share some similar advantages to other Mannich base curing agents, such as: extremely fast cure, low temperature cure (even below 0°C), good chemical resistance, good surface appearance, good moisture tolerance, and non-blushing properties. However, due to the long aliphatic side chain of cardanol, phenalkamines also have very good pot life, good flexibility, surface tolerance, and excellent water and salt water resistance. Many Cardolite phenalkamines are also approved for use in food contact and potable water coatings.
Phenalkamines are epoxy hardening agents comprised of cardanol, formaldehyde, and an organic diamine. Cardanol is produced from Cashew Nutshell Liquid (CNSL). Phenalkamine may be produced via a Mannich reaction to produce a low molecular weight polymer by condensing one mol of alkyl phenol, two mols of formaldehyde and two mols of a polyamine. The polyamine may be aromatic or aliphatic. Commercially, ethylene diamine and diethylenetriamine are used to produce Phenalkamine products.

1. CNSL Oil (Cashew Nut Shell Liquid) :-
CNSL is a reddish brown viscous liquid extracted from a soft honeycomb structure inside the cashew nutshell and is a by-product of the Cashew industry.It is extracted from the cashew nut shell, which is a pericarp fluid of the Shell nut. CNSL is a mixture of four components: all are substituted phenols - anacardic acid (I), cardanol (II), cardol(III) and 2-methyl cardol(IV). Anacardic Acid and Cardanol are monohydric phenols whereas Cardol and 2-methyl cardol are dihydric phenols. In the nut, CNSL occurs mainly as an anacardic acid (~90%) and cardol around slightly lower than 10%. The dual phenolic/alkenyl nature of CNSL makes it a potential natural raw material for the synthesis of water-resistant resins and polymers. CNSL is primarily used as raw material for CNSL Liquid Resin, PF Resin and Cashew Friction Dust(CFD) for Automobile Brake linings. It is also used for the manufacture of Paint and Varnishes, Epoxy Resins and Oil soluble Resins, Surface Active Agent, Synthetic Rubber & Wax compounding, Foundry Resins, etc...

2. Cardanol :-
Cardanol is a naturally occurring Phenol in light pale yellow color manufactured from CNSL. It is a monohydroxyl Phenol having a long hydrocarbon Chain (C15H27) in the Meta position. Cardanol also known as Cashew Phenol is obtained in the distillation process of technical CNSL under reduced pressure. The distillation takes place at high temperature and Distilled CNSL vapours are received through high vacuum. The average unsaturation of about two double bonds in the side chain of the Cardanol molecules make cross linking easy and provides a satisfactory gradual drying and baking properties to paints prepared from it. Because of its peculiar structure Cardanol Varnishes have high electric Insulation, greater resistance to water, chemicals and good flexibility.
Cardanol is used as a primary building block for epoxy curing agents and epoxy diluents and modifiers. This natural alkylphenolic material has an aromatic ring that provides a strong chemical resistant backbone while the hydroxyl group gives strong adhesion and good reactivity for fast and low temperature cure. A long aliphatic side chain provides excellent water resistance, good flexibility, low viscosity, extended pot life, and excellent corrosion protection. Cardanol has an excellent properties ideal for the coating industry. It is widely used to manufacture Epoxy Curing Agents and other resins for Paints, Varnishes, and Laminates. It's widely used in Rubber, Pesticides, Adhesives, Mineral Oils, Friction Brake Linings, Electrical isolation putty, ink printing.

3. Cashew Friction Dust:-
GCPPL is a leading producer of high performance cashew nutshell liquid (CNSL) based friction particles for use in the automotive brake industry. CNSL friction particle is used in disc pad brakes and drum linings as a stabilizing agent. These particles (sometimes called friction dust) have a resilient nature which cushions the engaging property of a piece of lining. In addition, they decompose on the surface of a lining at various elevated temperatures which controls the wear and offers a protective device by prohibiting excessive temperature from being developed. The inclusion of friction particles also helps control brake noise.
The friction particle product line consists of brown, black, and modified products that are designed to meet a comprehensive range of performance and property needs. Brake manufacturers can choose the most appropriate friction particle from a broad range of mesh sizes and particle distribution. These particles can be used in metallic, semi-metallic, asbestos and non-asbestos brake products.

4. Phenalkamine Epoxy Hardener :-
The Mannich reaction of cardanol, formaldehyde, and certain amines is called a phenalkamine. Phenalkamines share some similar advantages to other Mannich base curing agents, such as: extremely fast cure, low temperature cure (even below 0°C), good chemical resistance, good surface appearance, good moisture tolerance, and non-blushing properties. However, due to the long aliphatic side chain of cardanol, phenalkamines also have very good pot life, good flexibility, surface tolerance, and excellent water and salt water resistance. Many Cardolite phenalkamines are also approved for use in food contact and potable water coatings.these are a unique type of hardeners that possess the rapid curing characteristics of the aliphatic polyamines while also exhibiting the non-volatility and low order of toxicity associated with polyamides.
