Antimicrobial Copper Film(Adhesive type)
Antimicrobial Copper is the only touch surface material registered with the US Environmental Protection Agency(EPA), which kills more than 99.9% of bacteriathat cause infections in Healthcare-Associated Infection within 2 hours.
Antimicrobial Copper, which is effective in copper and copper alloys containing
more than 60% copper, is a natural antimicrobial agent of copper itself, and is
very effective in preventing infectious diseases such as cross contamination.
Scientifically, we can see that the copper surface affects bacteria in two
sequential steps.
The first step is the direct interaction between the copper surface and bacterial envelop, which destroys the cell membrane, which causes the bacterial cell lose its essential
nutrients and moisture, thereby weakening the cell generally.
The envelope of all cells, including single cell organisms such as bacteria, is
characterized by stable flow of electrical microcurrents, which leads to differences in
entry into and out of cells.
When bacteria come into contact with the copper surface, a shot circuit of current
occurs in the cell membrane, which weakens the cell membrane and creates a hole.
Another method of making holes in the cell membranes is local oxidation or corrosion, which occurs when a single copper molecule or copper ions are released from the
copper surface and attack the building blocks(proteins or fatty acids) of the cell
membrane.
The breakthrough of the cell’s primary barrier,the flow of copper ions into the cell,
creates a deadly process that threatens bacterial cells.
Copper ions dominate the cell and interfere with cell metabolism( a biochemical-
reaction necessary for life).
This destruction process is carried out and promoted by an enzyme, which stops
enzymatic activity when excess copper binds to the enzyme.
This kills bacteria because they are no longer able to breathe, eat, digest and
generate energy.
After perforation of the cell, copper inhibits all of the interfering enzymes and
prevents the cells from transporting and digesting nutrients as well as repairing and
respiring damaged membranes.
This is why a wide variety of microbes are vulnerable to copper contact.
