Introduction of Expanded Metal Mesh
Expanded metal mesh is an intermediate raw material that allows light and air to flow freely through it and that has more rigidity than the sheet from which it was produced.
It is formed in an expanded metal mesh press and produced from any malleable metal sheet product. The plate, sheet, or coil is simultaneously slit and stretched into diamond-shaped openings. These openings are of uniform size and regularity.
Expanded Metal Mesh
Basic Types ¼ inch, ½ inch, ¾ inch, 1 inch
Material Suitable for Expanding Carbon Steel, Aluminum, Stainless Steel, Galvanized, Copper, Brass, Titanium, Platinum, Zinc, Nickel, Silver, Gold
Surface Finishes hot-dip, galvanizing, pre-galvanizing, anodizing, enameling, power coating, painting, plastic coating, etc
Benefits The “Flow” of Light and Air Design Customization Design Flexibility Strength and Formability
Applications Ceilings and roofs, Decorative dividers, Guards, Air and fluid filters, Fencing, Battery cells, Strainers, Partitions, Outdoor furniture, Speaker grills, Security walls, ceilings, floors, doors, Machine and window guards, Shelving and racks, Containers, Greenhouse benches
Styles of Expanded Metal Mesh
Regular (standard or raised) – all expanded metal mesh is produced in regular form off the expanders. The strands and bonds are set at a uniform angle to the plane of the sheet. This gives added strength and rigidity, as well as a skid resistant surface.
Flattened – is manufactured by processing regular expanded metal mesh in a rolling mill. The rolling process reduces the thickness of the original base metal.
Design Designations
Strands – The sides of the expanded metal meshdesign v
Strand Thickness – Thickness of the base material from which the sheet was produced.
Strand Width – Amount of metal fed under dies to produce one strand v
Strand Thickness and Width – Can be varied to create different openings. The width of the strand should equal or exceed the thickness of the base metal.
SWD – Nominal dimension, Short Way of Diamond v
LWD – Nominal dimension, Long Way of Diamond v
Design Size – Actual dimension SWD and LWD. Measured from a point to a corresponding point on the adjacent diamond. v
SWO – Short Way of Opening v
LWO – Long Way of Opening v
Bond – Where two strands intersect
