ABB has a long history in the control of drives - that is, the control of torque, speed, and position of electric machines. The first drives were controlled by rotating machines, the Ward-Leonard drive being the most common of these. The power electronics emerging in the 60s revolutionized the DC machine control by introducing thyristor rectifier bridges. Control of AC machines by frequency converters was made possible in the 70s with the further development of the thyristor technology. Improved performance of frequency converters increased the share of AC drives, making them the most popular way to control electric motors. This was done in the 80s by darlington transistors and GTO thyristors, and in the 90s by IGBTs and IGCTs. This trend was boosted by the development of powerful control algorithms such as vector control and direct torque control (DTC). Today, AC drives are commonly used in many applications. These applications range from heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) to demanding servo control, rolling mills, ship propulsion and wind turbines.
