Potassium Chloride is a chemical compound containing both potassium and chlorine. It is considered a halide salt, which means that it contains a halogen atom and is crystalline in nature like other salts. In its pure state, it is white and odorless. Impure potassium chloride varies in color from white to pink to red.

Potassium is one of the three fundamental nutrient elements necessary for plant growth. Potassium containing fertilizers are applied to soils and crops in either the chloride or the sulphate form, depending on the particular crop. Potassium Chloride is most frequently used.

Potassium Chloride has a crystalline structure like many other salts. Its structure is face-centered cubic. Its lattice constant is roughly 630 picometers.

The density of Potassium Chloride is 1.984. Potassium Chloride Melting and Boiling point is 770 ºC and 1420 ºC, respectively. Potassium Chloride is easy to soluble in water, 340g/L (20 ºC)

Almost all of the potassium in the world is used in fertilizers. As potassium ions are a vital part of plant nutrition, crops and trees must be grown in soil with high concentrations of potassium ions. Since the growth of many plants is limited by their potassium intake, the majority of the Potassium Chloride produced in the world is used for fertilizers. When used as a fertilizer, it is called muriate of potash, which is available in white or red. White potash will dissolve in water, making it useful in liquid starter fertilizers.
